Benefits

Psyllium is ‘Wheat Free’ and ‘Gluten Free’ and is an all-natural product, containing no additives or preservatives, and therefore may be subject to seasonal colour and flavour variations.

Psyllium is a tremendous natural form of fibre - a water soluble fibre used primarily as a gentle bulk-forming laxative designed to relieve constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, diverticulitis and other intestinal problems. When Psyllium husk comes in contact with water, it swells and forms a gelatinous mass that stimulates the transport of waste through the intestinal tract, keeping the waste matter / feaces hydrated and soft. It soaks up watery outlets easing diarrhea, dysentery and hemorrhoids.

Some studies have shown Psyllium to be quite effective in lowering cholesterol. Nutritionists advise that water-soluble fibre may lower cholesterol by preventing the re-absorption of bile acids. Bile acids are made from cholesterol, and after they aid fat digestion, fibre binds with them and escorts them out of the body.

Consumption of Psyllium in association with a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol has been reported to reduce the risk of coronary heart disease.

It can be is used in the treatment of constipation, especially in diverticular disease and when excessive straining must be avoided for example following anorectal surgery.

The fibre content can reduce the release of dietary sugar from the digestive tract into the blood stream, thus aiding in the stabilisation of blood sugar levels, which may be beneficial to diabetics.

Psyllium can create a feeling of "fullness" in the body, which can also help curb appetite.

Storage Recommendations

Store in a cool dry place, preferably in an airtight container

Concerns

Psyllium generally does not cause excessive gas and bloating, however if this does occur, drink plenty of water. This helps with its therapeutic effects and to prevent it from causing any intestinal blockage. Because psyllium absorbs water, always consume it with large amounts of fluid.

Psyllium can cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. If you are highly allergic to many other substances, check with your allergist before taking it.

Certain medications may interact with psyllium. It may be advisable to consume the psyllium husk 1 – 2 hours prior or after taking any medication.

It is recommended you discuss the use of psyllium, any current medication(s), or use whilst pregnant with your doctor or pharmacist.

For individual dietary requirements we recommend that you consult with your dietician or doctor.
